The historic center of Kraków (Stare Miasto), declared a World Heritage Site in 1978, is divided into two distinct areas: Wawel Hill and the medieval city of Krakow. The high fortifications that surrounded the medieval city were built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Currently a circular park (Planty) replaces the old walls and its dozens of watchtowers. The starting point of the visit is Rynek Glówny, also known as the market square, since at its center is the large fabric market (Sukiennice) dating from the 14th century, now occupied by souvenir shops.
