About the Tour

A visitor to Germany at the start of the 20th Century would have believed that the next 100 years would be glorious. But something terrifying was lurking in the heart of this outwardly advanced nation. By 1945 Germans could look around them and barely see two bricks piled on top of one another. Their nation had become a synonym for cruelty. What happened?
On this fascinating free tour, we explore the roots of Hitler's evil empire. How did the Nazi party take an advanced, civilized nation, and turn it towards barbarism?
We will explore the missteps in the creation of Germany, the warning signs that were ignored, the roots of the Nazis' hateful antisemitism, the cultural revolution which allowed Hitler to force a fringe political idea into the daily lives of every German. We will discover how conspiracy theories and propaganda convinced a nation to follow a limited, irrational and paranoid man into oblivion. All this against the back drop of some of Berlin's most glorious histor

About the Guide
Hello. I'm Rob, an English-speaking tour guide living in Berlin. I arrived in the city 12 years ago and began tour guiding almost right away. Since then I've been lucky enough to work as a history guide in Paris and New York City, but Berlin is my permanent home. I've led thousands of tours down the years, both for tourists and during educational trips for high school and college students. I'm a registered guide at Deutsche Stiftung (German Memorial) sites like the former concentration camp memorial Sachsenhausen in Berlin. Aside from History, I studied literature at University, and, unless it's raining, I usually bring my dog Gilbert on tour with me. He's a rescue dog from Romania and is very gentle, and great with adults, children, and other dogs.

How to Find Guide
I will be standing between the statue of Martin Luther and St. Mary's Church, wearing a name badge, and usually with my dog Gilbert.
